Plant Data was my very first FileMaker database (1997), the reason I got into FileMaker. I already had most of the entries in a ClarisWorks database, and some small drawings I'd done of plants. I really wanted to link the two. This is the result.
The drawings are not so hot. But it is a very useful tool for anyone doing any landscaping. You can search for plant characteristics and come up with groups, or sets of plants.
The plants themselves are selected for the central and southern coast of California, with a few tropicals which do well here in San Diego.
There are sometimes comments about what I think about the plant, how to use it, and its problems, if any.
A search on "Uses" can find plants by some of my custom keywords. Here are a few of the criteria: Japanese look, Specimen, Color, Tropical Look, Dry, Patio.
Searching by size can be a little imprecise. I didn't use a very standardized system when I entered the sizes.
A second file, Plant Sets, allows you to save named sets independently of the main file. The main reason is not just to find them again, but to allow editing of the names. There are sometimes many varieties of one species on one record of the main file.
The interface is somewhat different from what I usually do, in that the list view is light text on dark background. But it works pretty well, and brings back memories of younger days :-)
I added a few features for printing pages with different sized pictures (or photos), but it never really came to much.
It is totally open, so you can add to it, change it, fix it, whatever.
